The Adventures of Tintin by Steven Spielberg

The Adventures of Tintin

Animated movie by Steven Spielberg based on the wonderful series of Comic Books by the Belgian Artist George Remi (1907 - 1983) who was the author who went by the pseudonym Herge (his initials reversed; "RG" pronounced in French). The Tintin comics are seen as the most successful European comic strip books and has been translated into more than 50 languages.

Tintin was the first comic book series I fell in love with, then came Asterix and Obelix, these days there are many. These comic books are for all children aged 7 to 107, and the young at heart.

Tintin is a young reporter always on the lookout for stories.  He always gets into trouble with unsavory characters; spies, drug dealers, slave traders, and many others.  His adventures take him all over the world, from Russia, to America, China, from the deepest ocean to the highest mountains. Tintin is the hero in the stories and gets into all kinds of experiences with his white dog Snowy, a wire fox terrier, who often saves the day. He has a few characteres that come up time and again in his books like, the mad, cussing and swearing old Captain Haddock, the scatty and almost deaf Professor Calcullus, the twins Thomson and Thompson, and the opera singer Bianca Castiafore who shatters glass with her voice. Aparently these characters were all based on real people. The characters of the twins were based on his dad and his twin brother who wore bowler hats, the professor was based on the Swiss physicist Auguste Picard, and Bianca Castiafore on Maria Callas.

In Afrikaans, Tintin is called Kuifie (which refers to his fringe that stands straight up into the air), Captain Haddock is called Kaptein Sardyn.  Thomson and Thompson are called Uys en Buys in Afrikaans, and in French Dupont and Dupond. His dog Snowy is called Milou in French.

Ice Age Trilogy

Ice Age Trilogy

This is a delightful story of three unlikely animals that form a troop; a sable-tooth tiger, a mammoth, and a sloth and their shenanigans. Between their adventures is woven a story of a squirrel-like creature that has an acorn and wants to conserve it, and how he gets into all kinds of trouble because of this.

War and Peace - Tolstoy

I enjoyed the first 2 films. Then came the battle in the third film. I realise that it portrayed the futility of war, and also the chaos, but after the first 10 minutes I got it, and the rest of it was just more of the same with strident music that nearly drove me round the bend. The last part also wasn't nearly as interesting as they could have made it. (BBC version) It may be a classic, and it is definitely dated. Time for a remake? How about a matrixified war and peace?

The Matrix Movie DVD

The Matrix

The Matrix has the most fascinating scenes of cinematologic genius. They used innovative techniques to depict the science fiction scenes. One would think that Philosophy would be difficult to make exciting and interesting, and yet, they have created a masterpiece with this film; gripping, tense, intense, and very engrossing.

Ratatouille Movie DVD

Ratatouille, the DVD Movie

The story of a rat that becomes a famous chef in Paris by some devious means. Fun for adults and children.

My Ratatouille doesn't look anything like the Ratatouille in the movie, but it tastes alright.  See link to recipe below.

Hitler the rise of evil movie

Hitler, the rise of evil - the movie
Hugh wanted to watch this. I hate watching any Hitler movies. Hitler kicked my family out of Germany because my grandfather wouldn't take part in the war, wouldn't fight and didn't support what Hitler was doing. They were given 48 hours to leave the country, a one-way ticket out, one suitcase for each person and that's it. It split the family. My father came out with his father, stepmother, and stepsister. The other kids stayed behind in Switzerland with friends of the family. My father only found out about his other stepbrother some 50-odd years later when he was living in Germany doing a foreign attache job in Bonn.  I suppose if Hitler didn't do this, I would not exist because my mom and dad wouldn't have met and wouldn't have married. So who do I have to thank?

My dad died earlier this year.  Click here for some pics of him and my mom when they got married. Wilfrid Wilker in memoriam

Fur - An imaginary portrait of Diane Arbus

Fur is a very strange movie indeed. Diane Arbus is supposed to have been one of the best photographers of the last century.  This is a story of how her life might have been, the thoughts and experiences she may have had.  If you don't like weird, this will probably not be for you. I found it intriguing and engrossing. Nicole Kidman plays the leading lady. Opposite her plays a man with a very hairy condition - hence the name Fur

The other double-feature movie we watched was Blott on the landscape. A hilarious story of an British lady who wants to stop people from building a highway through her large estate in the country, and is helped by her gardener who uses some unconventional methods to assist her. Great fun.

I don't like violence so the other two Tarantino movies Kill Bill and Kill Bill II don't get my vote. Its about killing start, middle, end, and in between with hardly a story (also available in Blu ray Kill Bill Box Set).

We had a bit of a video week this week. We also watched Volver with Penelope Cruz. This was a rather strange movie, but well worth watching. I don't want to give the game away. Intriguing.
