The Adventures of Tintin by Steven Spielberg

The Adventures of Tintin

Animated movie by Steven Spielberg based on the wonderful series of Comic Books by the Belgian Artist George Remi (1907 - 1983) who was the author who went by the pseudonym Herge (his initials reversed; "RG" pronounced in French). The Tintin comics are seen as the most successful European comic strip books and has been translated into more than 50 languages.

Tintin was the first comic book series I fell in love with, then came Asterix and Obelix, these days there are many. These comic books are for all children aged 7 to 107, and the young at heart.

Tintin is a young reporter always on the lookout for stories.  He always gets into trouble with unsavory characters; spies, drug dealers, slave traders, and many others.  His adventures take him all over the world, from Russia, to America, China, from the deepest ocean to the highest mountains. Tintin is the hero in the stories and gets into all kinds of experiences with his white dog Snowy, a wire fox terrier, who often saves the day. He has a few characteres that come up time and again in his books like, the mad, cussing and swearing old Captain Haddock, the scatty and almost deaf Professor Calcullus, the twins Thomson and Thompson, and the opera singer Bianca Castiafore who shatters glass with her voice. Aparently these characters were all based on real people. The characters of the twins were based on his dad and his twin brother who wore bowler hats, the professor was based on the Swiss physicist Auguste Picard, and Bianca Castiafore on Maria Callas.

In Afrikaans, Tintin is called Kuifie (which refers to his fringe that stands straight up into the air), Captain Haddock is called Kaptein Sardyn.  Thomson and Thompson are called Uys en Buys in Afrikaans, and in French Dupont and Dupond. His dog Snowy is called Milou in French.
